How Wasteful the Older Generation Was

This was forwarded to me via email and I liked it so much, and it is so true, I thought I would share it here. Not so much to do about computers but the bit about all those gadgets etc. What did we do back then to keep in touch ??

...... In the line at the store, the young cashier told the older woman that she should bring her own grocery bag because plastic bags weren’t good for the environment.

The woman apologised to him and explained, “We didn’t have the green thing back in my day.”

The assistant responded, "That's our problem today. The older generation did not care enough to save our environment."

He was right, that generation didn’t have the green thing in its day.

Back then, they returned their milk bottles, pop bottles and beer bottles to the store. The store sent them back to the plant to be washed and sterilised and refilled, so it could use the same bottles over and over. So they really were recycled.

But they didn’t have the green thing back in that customer's day.

In her day, they walked up stairs, because they didn’t have an escalator in every store and office building. They walked to the grocery store and didn’t climb into a 300-horsepower machine every time they had to go half a mile.

But she was right. They didn’t have the green thing in her day.

Back then, they washed the baby’s nappies because they didn’t have the disposable kind. They washed clothes by hand and dried clothes on a line, not in an energy gobbling machine burning up 220 volts – wind and solar power really did dry the clothes. Kids got hand-me-down clothes from their brothers or sisters, not always brand-new clothing.

But that old lady is right, they didn’t have the green thing back in her day.

Back then, they had one TV, or radio, in the house – not a TV in every room. And the TV had a small screen the size of a handkerchief, not a screen the size of the state of Montana. In the kitchen, they blended and stirred by hand because they didn’t have electric machines to do everything for you. When they packaged a fragile item to send in the mail, they used a wadded up old newspaper to cushion it, not styrofoam or plastic bubble wrap. Back then, they didn’t fire up an engine and burn petrol just to cut the lawn. They used a push mower that ran on human power. They exercised by working so they didn’t need to go to a health club to run on treadmills that operate on electricity.

But she’s right, they didn’t have the green thing back then.

They drank from a fountain when they were thirsty instead of using a cup or a plastic bottle every time they had a drink of water. They refilled their writing pens with ink instead of buying a new pen, and they replaced the razor blades in a razor instead of throwing away the whole razor just because the blade got dull.

But they didn’t have the green thing back then.

Back then, people took the bus and kids rode their bikes to school or caught the school bus instead of turning their parents into a 24-hour taxi service. They had one electrical outlet in a room, not an entire bank of sockets to power a dozen appliances. And they didn’t need a computerised gadget to receive a signal beamed from satellites 2,000 miles out in space in order to find the nearest pizza joint.

But isn't it sad the current generation laments how wasteful the old folks were just because they didn't have the green thing back then?

Do you use traffic excahnges

I have used traffic exchanges for around two years now and have seen many people not using them to their advantage.

What is a traffic exchange I hear some of you say. A traffic exchange is a web site that allows you to advertise your web site to other people that have joined the traffic exchange. To get your web site seen by other people you have to click on a link to view their web site. Some exchanges give one view to your site for every site you click on, but some only give a view for every two sites you click on.

There are also two types of traffic exchanges, manual and auto. The names say it all. In a manual TE you have to manually click on a site to view and in an auto TE you set the program running and you can leave it to surf pages for you.

There are some things you need to check and keep on checking. I have seen pages in TE's that return a "404 page not found" page and "This site has been suspended" page.

After submitting your site to the TE and it is approved that is not the end. After this you need to see that your pages are functioning correctly. Obviously you don't want to waste your credits on sites that have malfunctioned or disappeared.

Another thing you need to check is if you have media or scripts running on your advertised web page. I have noticed that a lot of people are using media based or script base pages to advertise some of their web sites. They must fail to realise that a majority of the surfers today run programs like NoScripts to prevent certain problems like some pages that tend to break frames. I know I run NoScripts and I know many other users that do as well. So what is happening when we view these pages with media or scripting? It is all blocked so we just continue surfing as if nothing happened, not paying any attention to the sites that are being blocked. This is bad for YOU if you are using these kind of sites. My suggestion: only use splash pages without media.

If you are promoting other TE's the site you are promoting will have a page full of their own splash pages for you to use, so use them instead of the sites main page, when someone clicks on the splash page they will be taken to the main page anyway.

A splash page is a page that is small in physical size and just a few Kbytes so it will download fast. It may be a page with just a graphic on that is clickable to take the person clicking to the main web site. Here is an example of one I have made.

If you are making your own splash page, make sure the click will open the web site in a new window like my example above so the surfer can continue to surf the TE. I know I have clicked on a page within a TE in the past and when it has opened inside the the TE I have just continued to surf. If the site is opened in a new window the surfer can continue to surf but when that person stops surfing your page will still be on their computer for them to look at.

This also applies to any external link on your web site. If you send someone to another site to have a look at an example, or a similar site, or if you have quoted someone and want to show where the quote comes from, you don't want them to lose your site. How many times have you gone to another site to see something else interesting. A few clicks later your thinking "What was the name of the original site". If your link took them to a new window, your site is still below the one they are looking at and when they close that window your site is still visible to them.

Slax, Linux with speed.

Today I am going to talk about Slax. This is a version of Linux based on Slackware, which is already a fast version.

I was introduced to Slax. by Linux Format, a magazine I subscribe to and would recommend highly if you have any interest in Linux. It is great for beginers and more advanced users who want to keep abreast of everything Linux. Slax was featured on the cover disc so I popped it into the drive and installed it.

The reason I use this on one computer is for its speed and it's simplicity straight from the CD. There is more than one way to install it. One is to run it like a "live CD" (Boot from the CD and run everything from there, nothing is installed onto the hard drive of the computer you are using so your normal operating system is untouched), and the other is to load it straight into RAM, memory. Running it in RAM means there is no wait times for hard discs or CD drives so it does make it very fast.

The second usage of loading into RAM was appealing to me as I use traffic exchanges. These are sites where you view other peoples web pages to earn credits, so you can use those credits to advertise your own web pages. Obviously using these sites I need a fast operating system so the next page can be loaded as quickly as possible and in turn earn the most amounts of credits in the shortest amount of time.

There are two types of traffic exchanges, manual and auto. Manual traffic exchanges are as they say manual and you have to sit and click every time a page loads. For an example of a manual TE click here. Auto TE's are as they say automatic, so long as they keep going and a page does not stop them with pop ups etc. (Though they are not allowed some people try to get away with adding them). You can set a computer with an auto exchange and just leave it but do check every now and again that it is still running. To try to entice you to watch auto exchanges they show pages that if you click on them you get bonuses like extra credits to advertise your own page. For an example of an auto TE click here. For this type of exchange Slax is a good option for a fast operating system.

If you want traffic to your web site, maybe you are selling something, involved in MLM online or want people to read your blog then a traffic exchange is a good idea. Which operating system do you use ?

When visiting many sites recently I have been getting annoyed with something people assume.

The thing is this: When people mention software they say things like "Will work on both a PC and Mac" or they might say "Only works on a PC".

SO... what is a PC and what does PC stand for ?

I always thought it stood for Personal Computer, and indeed that is what it stands for. So what is a Mac ? It is an Apple Macintosh computer. It is a personal computer that runs software for Apple Macintosh hardware. Notice what I said there..."It is a personal computer.."

Yes an Apple Macintosh is a personal computer, I know that and I bet really you knew that if you thought about it. I know the people who state PC and Mac are saying their software will run on a Mac.

Now what about those people who run Linux. Don't they use a PC ? What if were to download a piece of software and found that the PC version only runs on the Windows operating system ? Would I get a refund if I had bought it ?

What they should be saying is that their software runs on Windows and Mac operating systems. Before I buy any software now I always email and ask the same old question, Does your software run on the Linux operating system ? I normally find that it does not and so go and look else where for what I want.

If you sell software, or even give it away, and mention more than one version, don't forget that a PC is a bit of hardware for the operating system to sit on and mainly all computers in the home are PC's they just run different operating systems. So mention the operating system not the hardware. Even some of the newer Apple computers run on Intel/AMD etc. based chips.

The Linux operating system is very good if you have different tasks to do and need something specific to do that job. I use more than one version and will in later posts say what I use for which task.

How do you sell your products and services on the Internet?

You probably have your own web site and that s a good start but how do you get people to find you. Have you ever searched for your products in a search engine to see if people would get to your web site.

Another option is to sell where you know people are searching for products like auction sites like Ebay. Yes you will pay that bit more to advertise and sell there but at least your sales have grown.

Recently there have been new web sites set up where you can sell your products and services that are not auction sites and as these are growing in popularity they are another resource that you know people are searching for products.

One such site is Trippleclicks.

This site is worldwide and growing. You can sell to the countries that you think will want your goods and where postage is no problem, you specify which countries to include. Because it is world wide if you are selling a service then if that service is conducted online you can sell to the whole world. The begining - The first post.

I have other blogs so this not really my first post, just my first post to open this blog.

I intend to talk about my experiences both with computers and the Internet. I appreciate feedback and don't mind if you don't agree with me, these posts are just my thoughts and experiences.

At present I use Linux as an operating system but have in the past used DOS, Windows from 95 to XP including NT and server editions.

I have in the past and now been trying to use the Internet to make money. Like many of you I am sure, I have lost on some and won on others. I use traffic exchanges like Trafficera. I will let you know of others as the blog progresses including some of the other ways to make money on the net.
